History

In 1960 when the health care needs of a growing north Baldwin community had surpassed the services provided by the Mattie Rhodes Hospital (a home that had been converted to a 12-bed medical facility), federal funds were secured to cover 90 percent of the cost of a new hospital with the remaining $90,000 to be provided by the community. In that year, the hospital board was formed.
In 1968 a 2-mill tax to support improvements in health care in north Baldwin was passed by the Alabama State Legislature. In 1970 Bay Minette Infirmary opened giving the people of north Baldwin a 55-bed medical facility that included local access to emergency medical services. In 1984 the hospital re-incorporated and the name was changed to North Baldwin Hospital.
In 2001 the hospital was leased by Infirmary Health System and the name was changed again to North Baldwin Infirmary. This affiliation with the region’s health care leader has brought greater assess to state-of-the-art health care to the communities served by North Baldwin Infirmary.
Additionally, as part of the lease agreement Infirmary Health System provided $20 million of the $25 million that was invested in an addition and renovation to the current facility. The remaining funds are raised by the community through the North Baldwin Infirmary Foundation and revenues of the hospital.
