The North Baldwin Healthcare Authority Board recently established a new registered nurse scholarship program for students accepted into the Faulkner State Community College Nursing Program. One scholarship will be awarded per year up to $6,000 beginning this fall.

“The scholarship will provide financial assistance to a deserving nursing student and it will ensure that there are prepared, competent nurses in place to fill the demands at North Baldwin Infirmary,” said Dr. Phyllis French, chairwoman of the North Baldwin Healthcare Authority scholarship committee.

Dr. French explained that the scholarship will help offset college tuition, which is on the rise at nursing schools around the country, and the additional costs that a student nurse must pay for such as equipment, uniforms, fees, and other required items that make expenses add up quickly.

In addition to providing an annual scholarship, Bob Zarr Sr., North Baldwin Healthcare Authority Board chairman, said that the nursing students would also receive most of their clinical training at North Baldwin Infirmary or one of other Infirmary Health System facilities.

Students who wish to submit an application for the North Baldwin Healthcare Authority Registered Nurse Scholarship must first apply for and be accepted to the Faulkner State Community College Nursing Program.

Upon successful completion of the registered nurse program and Alabama licensure, the student will be expected to apply for employment with North Baldwin Infirmary or an Infirmary Health System affiliate and, if hired, complete a three-year work commitment with Infirmary Health System to avoid any obligation to repay the financial assistance provided.

Applications for the nursing program are available at Faulkner State Community College. Scholarship applications are available at North Baldwin Infirmary Human Resources, Faulkner State Community College Student Services and Nursing departments, and Baldwin County High School Guidance Office.

The scholarship application deadline is May 29. The North Baldwin Healthcare Authority scholarship committee will review applications July 2 and conduct applicant interviews July 15. The first award recipient will be announced July 31.
