Learning vehicle promoted by LifeFlight during National Emergency Medical Services Week

LifeFlight landed on the helipad at North Baldwin Infirmary during National Emergency Medical Services Week to promote emergency medical education and introduce medical staff to PHIL, also known as the PHI Air Medical Intensive Learning Vehicle.

This learning vehicle equipped with internal evaluation cameras and an external imbedded plasma screen, includes a state-of-the-art full-tissue manikin that blinks, speaks, and breathes.

When touching the blue eyed Metiman manikin, the staff also discovered that it has a heartbeat and a pulse and accuratley mirrored human responses when procedures such as intubation and ventilation were performed.

"This new age training allows emergency and medical personnel to learn and practice beyond the limits of made-up scenarios and encounter responses that are so life-like," Lisa Bush, emergency department manager said. "It is by far the most technologically advanced traning manikin to date."

PHIL coordinator and flight paramedic Mike Marciniec explained that  a multitude of trauma and medical scenarios, including unstable angina with cardiac arrest and congestive heart failure with pulmonary edema, can be programmed via an intergrated computer system.

When the Manikin's health conditions were programmed to change, the staff observed the corresponding vital signs changing as well.

Marciniec added that the manikin can be configured to simulate a variety of age groups, both male and female, and thus respond accordingly. For example, he said the manikin can be changed into a full-term pregnant woman.

"We appreciate LifeFlight for providing this educational experince," Bush said. National EMS Week was celebrated on May 18.
